I’ve been having some clutch trouble and it seems to be either the throwout bearing or the pilot bearing. This is unfortunate because I was planning on using my tax refund on shoring up the suspension/handling set up. It’s ok though. Going with my philosophy of turning a weakness into a strength: I am going to take this opportunity to replace the clutch and flywheel as well.

Kinja'd!!!

They just arrived and I cannot wait to have them in my car! Thanks to SuperMiata/949 Racing for making quality products. After a friendly conversation with one of the guys at their shop, I decided on purchasing their organic clutch and aluminum flywheel for a B6 (or 1.6l) on my BPE8 (1.8l). Torque capacity is at 220ft lbs, so it will be plenty for me as I never plan on forced induction.

Just going to the clutch and flywheel of a B6 engine is going to lighten things a little and free up revs, making for a slightly more responsive engine. However going from the oem 19lb steel flywheel to a 7. 8lb aluminum flywheel is going to be night and day. I am drooling with anticipation.

Kinja'd!!!

This will be the first of (hopefully) many modifications to come this spring. Spring p lans include a tune up (looking into extended reach plugs) , continuing to lighten (bye bye a/c) , s horing up suspension and braking.   Until next time Oppo : live fast and t ake lots of chances.

Are you 100% sure you want to ditch AC? Sitting in traffic without AC for even 60 seconds when it’s 80 or hotter... Is not fun

I went the opposite direction on my M iata, I have the 1.6 and have the Flyin’ Miata 1.8 kit on it.

Sounds like a fun spring and an even more fun summer!

Does 11lbs off the flywheel really make a noticeable difference? I understand that spinning mass hampers the engine a lot more than static mass (same reason some bicyclists obsess about the weight of their wheels), but I’d think that the rest of the drivetrain has enough spinning mass that 11lbs wouldn’t make a big difference.

Haha I won’t disagree with you, however the a/c is non functional and I have been getting by without a/c in a car for about 10 years now. My last car was a tj wrangler which didn’t have a/c  from the factory.

Lol interesting. Are you going to  or have you already  turboed?

From what I have been talking to people and reading : yes very much. I will have to post my personal findings in time though.

In that case.... Weight savings! Wooo!

Figured out your suspension plans yet?

Exactly! I need to cut weight off the front end. So far I’ve only taken weight off behind the engine and I feel it has upset the balance of my car slightly.

As far as suspension. I have decided nothing lol. Gonna have to see what I can budget and when. But this body roll needs to go so I know I want stiffer  front and rear sway bars and I want my car about an inch lower.

Are you still running stock wheels..? Going up to 15"s can cut an incredibly noticeable amount of rotating mass, and get you better tire selection. It's a lot cheaper than suspension too!

Very noticeable difference. I did back-to-back testing with 949 Racing last year and I instantly wanted the 1.6 flywheel for my 1.8. Miata is already pretty great in terms of revs, but oh man that lighter flywheel is fantastic.

Does your Volvo hold revs? Both of mine had what felt like insane rev hang, but I was told that that was normal haha

I agree!  My factory wheels were 15x6 enkeis. T hey were the second heaviest wheels on any na miata lol. Not all that long ago I put some 15x7 a dvanti storms and cut like 20lbs of rotating mass. It made a huge difference in handling, ride quality, and acceleration.

That's right.... I remember you posting about that. S1's look so good. Sometimes I wish I'd grabbed those instead of 6ul's

I like them a lot , but he grass is always greener I suppose . I like your 6uls. I think they supposed to be slightly stronger than the storms, right??

Hmm I don't know about that, but I have heard that the offset is better for Miatas. But the storms are a little bit lighter!

I didn’t know about the offset difference.  But yeah the weight is why I went with the storms.  I’m obsessed with being lightweight as possible lol

The Miata probably won’t ever see boost. It is 99% a track car that very very rarely sees the street. I got the FM kit because it can take a ton of abuse.

For power, I have my boosted BRZ but that has its own headaches...

Got ya. Makes sense. Mine is a daily driver and only sees the streets.  I saw your brz post yesterday. Further supports my consideration of a brz/86 as a second car lol.

Haha I’ll throw my dyno sheet up here once I take my car over to the tuner this afternoon. I should be heading over there in ~30 min

The hang doesn’t seem too bad, though I guess I do have to hold clutch in a little longer when shifting 1-2 or 2-3 than I’d really like to.

What I’ve noticed more is that it doesn’t rev up as quickly as I’m used to from my truck or the Fiata I’ve rented a few times. Both of those only need a quick blip when downshifting , but in the Volvo I have to go like halfway down  on the pedal and then wait half a second
